 Solidarity Brings Rewards

 

Dear Brothers and Sisters :

Congratulations to each and every one of you and Thank you for your strong support. Your solidarity has produced the rewards of a new collective agreement, without concessions, and incorporating a number of very important gains.  Having said that, it must also be said that we did not achieve all we had hoped for.

The overall settlement represents approximately 9.5% increase in wages and benefits over the term of the agreement.

 

Here are the highlights .

Term - 3 years --- August 15, 2000 to August 14, 2003

Union paid Time - Increased $300 per month to $3 300 per month $39 600 per year.  This will improve our capacity to serve the membership .

Union Office at the Mine Site - The Union will have use of an office at the mine site (our old office) at no cost to the Union.  This will enable our on site Committees Officers and Shop Steward to function more effectively and efficiently to serve the members interests .

Union Occupational Health and Safety Chair -  A one-half time position, paid for by the Company, will enable our OHSC Chair to keep better track of health and safety at the Mine and allow time to get involved in more extensive health and safety consciousness and training than has been reasonably possible before .

Occupational Health and Safety Chair and Chief Steward -  The production bonus, where applicable, for OHSC Chair and Grievance Chair will me maintained so that members who are working on behalf of the larger membership are not suffering financially.

Education Leave - A new education leave provision up to 1 year.

Boots,Gloves and Slickers - Gloves and slickers will be supplied free of charge on an as need basis. Leather boots will be reimbursed up to $125.00 (up from $50.00 each 6 months)

Job Posting - Company and Union will review any successful job postings not placed within 30 days.

Job Training - Extensive new Job Training language and beefed up Joint Workplace Training Committee.  The Company and the Union will review the status of entry level jobs in the spring of 2001.

Apprentices-  To be laid off by seniority within their trade group. New language allows existing Journeymen to bid on apprenticeships.

Vacation Pay on Layoff- Employees to be laid off may take their vacation pay in the week preceding the layoff.

Irregular Shift- The current practice of the Company paying $40.00 if you have to drive will be recognized in the contract.

 

Health and Welfare Benefits

Life/ AD&D- $72 000 year 2 and $74 000 year 3 (currently $70 000).

Visioncare- $100.00 / 2 years for prescription glasses for members and family.

Benefits for non-working injury/illness- Bring the health and welfare coverage from 2 to 3 years in the event of a non-working injury/illness as it is for work related injury/illness.

 

Pension Plan

Basic Benefit

1st year $47.00 per month per year of service (currently $45.00).
2nd year $48.00 per month per year service.
3rd year $50.00 per month per year service.

Voluntary Early Retirement Allowance - $20.00 per month per year service (up from $18.00) and Life Insurance coverage raised to $12 000 from $10 000.

30 Year Retirement Supplement - Increase to

1st year $2,800 per month.
3rd year $3,000 per month.
and Life Insurance coverage raised to $12 000 from $10
000.

Early Retiree Benefit Coverage - Early retiree benefit coverage and Life Insurance coverage raised to $12 000 from $10 000.

Minimum Pension- Increase the minimum pension paid to retirees from $25.00 per month to $27.00 per month .This should upgrade the pensions of about 15 retirees.

Extended health Coverage for Retirees over age 65

For retirees not covered by the early retirement benefits the company will provide the following monies to the Union

While the specific details are to be worked out with CHIPS (Canadian Health Insurance Plan Services) the Union’s not for profit health and welfare carrier we anticipate the Retirees Extended Health coverage will contain the following benefits.

In home nursing care to $5 000 per year
Semi- private & private hospital coverage
Out patient charges
Ambulance (air,sea or land )
prosthetics -orthopedic shoes (1 pair per year)
vision care -single focal- $150/2years
-bi-focal-$175/2years
- tri- focal $200/2 years
- contacts- $200
hearing aids $500/year
Clinical Psychology $500/year
Acupuncture $500/year
Paramedical services $500/year

 

Wages

Out of line Differential- Increased from $.30 to $.45.

General Wage Increases
Effective January 1, 2001 1%
Effective August 15, 2001 1.5%
Effective August 15, 2002 2.0%

Trades Rate Adjustment - Achieve through the creation of Job Class 10 to represent all JM
