CAW Local 3019 Newsletters

January 20th/04

To all CAW local 3019 Members

I would like to extend our sincerest best wishes to Brother Al Martineau and his family in dealing with the terrible fire that burned their home. Fortunately Al had insurance and I understand that most of his losses are covered.

I would like to thank everyone who helped out at the Union/Company Children’s Christmas Party, I think it went very well, which is a credit to all who pitched in, thanks again.

On the same day I had to take a cheque down to the Courtenay food bank on behalf of the CAW National and CAW local 3019, in the amount of $2000.00. As per our Collective Agreement, Article 3.05, the Company contributes on each hourly members behalf, one cent for every straight time hour worked. The money then goes to the CAW National and they divvy it up to different causes. The Campbell River and Courtenay food banks have done quite well under that system.

Along those lines the United Way Campaign is still ongoing. I was hoping that if I got involved as a United Way Board Member that I might have a positive impact on the fund raising at the mine site. So far to that end I’ve been a dismal failure. As of today, this is the worst year by far for fund raising. I think there have been only 21 pledges so far. We at the mine used to have the distinction of giving the most Per Capita of any other work force in the area. Considering what this Government is doing with the Social funding in this Province I think It’s time we step up to the plate again and help those in our Community that are far less fortunate than ourselves. So if you haven’t pledged yet it’s not too late, pledge forms are in the Human Resources Office and you may see me handing some out. So please sign up and help your Community.

Most of you now know that Breakwater Resources has been on the property again with some interest in the Mine. So we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. I’m sure we will be the first to know if any decisions are made either way. And we shouldn’t listen to or start rumors about what may happen.

Well it’s been three years and quite a three years at that, so it’s time for Executive Elections again. I understand a lot of existing Executive may not run again. So if you think you have something to offer, give it a try. As always we are going to need the best Executive we can muster. These aren’t easy responsibilities; very often it’s thankless with difficult decisions that HAVE to be made.

Committee people are going to be renewed again too so watch for the notices that will be going up.

So I hope I didn’t forget any thing, remember to give to the United Way. Yours truly.
